Ferrari 612 Scaglietti

The Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, named for the Modenese designer who mastered the automotive aluminum form, is designed to be the world’s finest 2+2 seat sport coupe. It is designed by Pininfarina, which advances the sports coupe paradigm while paying homage to the famed Ferrari 375MM Coupe commissioned in 1954 for Ingrid Bergman by Roberto Rossellini.

The 612 Scaglietti combines luxury and exceptional functionality with supreme driving pleasure. Styling is built entirely of aluminum, which provides extremely high structural rigidity while significantly reducing weight, the 612 Scaglietti is a new breed of 2+2 sports cars. Compared with the outgoing 456M, the new 612 Scaglietti weighs 132 pounds less, providing superior handling and road-holding capabilities. A car clearly in a league of its own, the 612 can carry four passengers in comfort and still achieve speeds and cornering forces most sports cars can only dream of. The V12 engine in the 612 Scaglietti is positioned behind the front axle providing a mid-front engine layout which optimizes traction by placing 54 percent of the vehicle’s weight on the rear wheels.

Further enhancing traction is CST – Traction and Stability Control ? a unit that governs all the car’s electronic safety systems (ABS, ASR and EBD) and the car’s adaptive suspension to ensure maximum control. The CST can be overridden for track use at the driver’s discretion. Space and efficiency complements the 612 Scaglietti high performance and deliver the highest levels of thrust and balance without sacrificing comfort and luxury.

The 612 Scaglietti is the pinnacle of the Italian automotive style. It boasts light but rigid all-alloy construction, a superb 540 bhp V12 engine displacing just under six liters, the new F1 paddle shift transmission, the first application of integrated stability and traction control in a Ferrari, an adaptive suspension including continuously variable shock absorbers.

The 612 Scaglietti’s beautiful yet functional bodywork was styled in close collaboration with Pininfarina.
Everything from the curve of the wheel arches to the trunk-lid lends the car an aerodynamic grace. But what truly gives the 612 Scaglietti a real touch of character are its scalloped sides, a styling cue borrowed from the legendary 375 MM bought by director Roberto Rossellini for actress Ingrid Bergman.

The traditional Ferrari air intake is given an original twist with the wheel arches protruding slightly further than the bonnet, while its projector headlights have transparent covers that display their inner workings.
The rear section is big and solid looking with the classic high round taillights as well.

The 612 Scaglietti boasts a superbly sophisticated and sporty interior that reflects its all-aluminum structure and advanced technologies.
The handcrafted leather used to upholster the seats and in the interior trim gives the cabin a sporty and exclusive ambience.
The interior accessories include a dual-zone climate control system, sound system (radio with CD player and six-channel digital unit developed especially by Bose for the 612 Scaglietti), a dusk sensor that automatically switches on the lights, a rain sensor that activates the windshield wipers, and an antitheft system with volumetric features.
The 612 Scaglietti’s trunk is bigger too: 240 liters as opposed to the 456M s 190 and the spare tire cubby hole can even be used for extra luggage if necessary.

The 612 Scaglietti is powered by a 65 degree V12 engine that displaces 5,748cc.  It punches out 540 bhp at 7,250 rpm, a full 98 bhp more than the 5,474 cc engine mounted in the 456M.

Several modifications have been made to optimize the engine’s performance and make it perform even more stunningly than it first did in the 575M Maranello.
The 612 Scaglietti offers more direct air intake tracts with separate ducts per cylinder bank, a new exhaust system to cut backpressure, a higher compression ratio (11.2:1), and intake and exhaust porting with improved fluid dynamic characteristics. The 612 Scaglietti boasts a Bosch Motronic ME7 CPU. It allows the vehicle to respond exceptionally quickly and smoothly and to make the car easier to control in all kinds of road conditions.

Gearbox & Transmission
The 612 Scaglietti has a transaxle layout where the gearbox is mounted alongside the rear differential.
This is a six-gear setup with multi-cone synchronizers. In addition to the manual gearbox version, the 612 Scaglietti is also available with the F1A gearbox (the A stands for Automatic), one of the sophisticated new Formula 1-derived electro-hydraulic systems designed to deliver sporty, yet comfortable driving.

The CST electronic stability and traction control system enhances the 612 Scaglietti’s dynamic handling even further. It  is the first time the system has been used in a Ferrari and it guarantees optimal performance in tandem with complete safety.

The 612 Scaglietti is the very first Ferrari 12-cylinder to boast both an all-aluminum space frame chassis and aluminum body. As a result, the new car’s weight is cut by 40% and boasts increased torsional rigidity.

The 612 Scaglietti has near perfect weight distribution (46% front and 54% rear) that allows the vehicle to offer both the high performance driving of a rear-engine car and the roomy versatility of a front-engine layout.
The 612 Scaglietti’s space frame chassis consists of 38% extruded aluminum connected by 34% cast aluminum which acts as joints. Sheet aluminum (28%) reinforces the structure.
Unprecedented levels of robustness have been achieved with the new Ferrari chassis and bodywork that have significantly exceeded current international standards in automobile collisions.
